Fuel cell explained
Water, innovation and safety.
When you drive, the hydrogen travels from the tanks to the fuel-cell stack. There it goes through an electrochemical reaction with oxygen collected from the air intake. This creates electricity, which powers the motor, and water.
Inside the fuel cell, hydrogen atoms are split into protons and electrons. The electrons flow to the electric motor, which is what powers Nexo. The electrons then return to the fuel cell where they and the protons recombine with oxygen to form water.
As a fuel source, hydrogen is as safe as gasoline – if not safer. And to ensure the utmost safety, the fuel is stored inside incredibly durable carbon-fiber tanks, tested to withstand extremes of both heat and pressure. Because the tanks are highly pressurized and hydrogen is 16 times lighter than air, the fuel would instantaneously dissipate into the atmosphere if a tank was punctured.
The cutting-edge SmartSense innovations found inside the Nexo Fuel Cell venture into an exciting new era of automotive technology, which includes autonomous driving. They’re a big reason why the Nexo is the most intelligent vehicle we’ve ever produced.

Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist
Driver Attention Warning
Blind-Spot Collision Warning
High Beam Assist
Smart Cruise Control
Rear Cross-Traffic Collision Warning
Remote Smart Parking Assist
Forward Collision Avoidance Assist
Lane Following Assist (LFA)*
Another all-new innovation for Hyundai, Lane Following Assist automatically adjusts steering to make sure the vehicle is safely inside the lane. It also uses its sensors to maintain the proper speed to keep a safe distance from the car ahead.
Forward Collision Avoidance Assist
Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist (FCA)*
The moment it detects a slowing or stopped vehicle in your path, it warns you of a potential collision. If you don't stop in time, the system will automatically apply emergency braking to help avoid or reduce the severity of a collision.

FCA with Pedestrian Detection
For models with this safety enhancement, the forward camera and radar can also detect pedestrians in your path and activate the same warning and – if necessary – automatic braking.
Driver Attention Warning
Driver Attention Warning (DAW)*
To help prevent potential accidents, this system monitors your driving patterns to detect drowsy or inattentive driving. Once detected, it alerts you with a sound cue coupled with a warning message on the instrument panel.
Blind-Spot Collision Warning
Blind-Spot Collision Warning (BCW)*
Your Hyundai notifies you with a visual alert when its radars detect a vehicle in your blind spot area. If you try to change lanes in this situation, an audio warning will sound.
High Beam Assist
High Beam Assist (HBA)*
Constantly turning your high beams off and on can be a hassle, which is why this thoughtful feature automatically does it for you. It can detect oncoming vehicles and also, when they're no longer there, toggling between high and low beams accordingly.
2019 Hyundai Santa Fe pedestrian detection
Smart Cruise Control (SCC)*
While traveling at a speed set by you, it uses radars to maintain a safe distance from the car ahead. When your Hyundai slows down to 6 mph or less, the cruise control automatically turns off.
Rear Cross-Traffic Collision Warning
Rear Cross-Traffic Collision Warning (RCCW)*
To help make reversing safer—especially when you're backing out of a parking space with limited visibility—the Rear Cross-Traffic Collision Warning lets you know if its sensors detect a vehicle approaching from the left or right.
Remote Smart Parking Assist
Remote Smart Parking Assist*
Our autonomous system allows the Hyundai to park itself, even when you’re not inside the vehicle. Once you get out, the self-parking function can be started with a push of your smart key button. You can also summon the car out of its parking spot the same way. With an innovation like this, the future feels even less remote.

Frequently Answered Questions
Can I get the Nexo if I live outside California?
  • Currently, the Nexo is only available in California. Sign up at the bottom of this page to get updates regarding availability in your area.
Do I have to apply to be able to lease or purchase a Nexo?
  • Not at all. Simply contact or visit one of the California dealers where the Nexo is available. Please see dealer contact information above.
What happens if I run out of fuel?
  • Call Hyundai's 24/7 Roadside Assistance - 1-800-243-7766 - and you'll be towed to the nearest hydrogen fuel station.
What are the differences between fuel-cell, electric battery
and plug-in hybrid vehicles?
  • All three vehicles use electric drive motors, but there are differences in how they operate.

Fuel-cell vehicles use gaseous hydrogen from the fuel tank and oxygen from the air intakes to generate electricity for the motor through an electrochemical reaction.

An electric-battery vehicle gets its electricity entirely from batteries, which are recharged through a power outlet.

Plug-in hybrids have a battery that also uses a power outlet, which allows you to drive in all-electric mode. But it has a gas engine as well, so you can drive using both sources of energy.
How do I refuel the Nexo?
  • Fueling a Nexo is virtually the same as pumping gas. And it takes about the same amount of time: up to five minutes.
